“The Young and the Rest…” is all about women bringing new life to music made famous by men. Clearly a tribute, this show is better described as a girl-powered reboot of acoustic hits and deep tracks by Neil Young, CSN, America, The Eagles and more by the siren-voices of SimpleGifts (Rebecca Plunkett/Karen Paurus/Amy Courts) with a Celtic twist provided by Laura MacKenzie (whistles/flutes/bagpipe). Acoustic guitar by Billy McLaughlin with top-shelf bass and drums. Not to be missed among your tribute show choices! Click to download.

Billy McLaughlin, Acoustic Guitar
Known for his harp-like guitar playing technique he calls “finger tapping,” McLaughlin is an American original – an international performing and recording artist who has achieved Billboard’s Top-Ten Chart. Several years ago, he came to embody every musician’s greatest fear. The award-winning guitar virtuoso began struggling to play his own music. Searching in vain through countless therapies for an answer to his problem, he was finally diagnosed with a yet-to-be-cured neuromuscular disorder called Focal Dystonia. After enduring the loss of all he ever dreamed of, McLaughlin did what for many would be unthinkable — if not impossible — he taught himself to play left-handed. His remarkable story is captured in two award winning documentary films: Changing Keys: Billy McLaughlin and the Mysteries of Dystonia and two-time Emmy Award winning Starry Night – Billy McLaughlin with Orchestra Nova which aired on PBS stations. His triumphant comeback concert was also filmed by WWE camera-crew volunteers who captured Billy’s historic return for a DVD titled Coming Back Alive. Billy currently serves as the Ambassador of Awareness for the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation and is a founding member of the American Brain Foundation. Billy Oehrlein, Percussion
Billy sings, and plays drums and ornamental percussive instruments. He started playing drums at age six and graduated to a professional musician. He has performed regionally and nationally in the US, and in Europe. Billy toured with WHEELS for several years sharing stages with Randy Travis, Alabama, The Oak Ridge Boys, Marie Osmond, Juice Newton, and made regular appearances at the WE FEST country music festival. Billy has done numerous recording sessions and performed regularly with national recording artists Tina and the B-Sides, Billy McLaughlin, and most recently Jeff Arundel. He brings Simple Gifts season its dazzling holiday spirit with his percussive ornamental accents — ensures that holiday joyousness is on hand.

After graduating college in 2003, she spent eight years in Nashville, TN where she independently released two critically acclaimed pop and alternative folk albums, and promoted them on multiple national tours. After moving to Minneapolis with her family in 2011, Amy continued with her solo work while also leading worship and playing with various local bands. She joined Simple Gifts in 2014, and two years later released her third album with her husband Paul as the duo Fireworks on Ferris Wheels. She is currently pursuing her Master of Divinity at Luther Seminary and serving as the pastoral intern at Oak Grove Lutheran Church in Richfield.
Rebecca Plunkett, Violin
Rebecca’s experience playing violin in small ensembles and singing on worship teams began in high school, laying the foundation for her love of playing violin and singing in groups like Simple Gifts. Her education at the University of Northwestern St Paul with Roger Frisch, former Associate concertmaster of the Minnesota Orchestra, helped make her the performer she is today. Rebecca has performed locally, nationally, and internationally in a wide variety of contexts and genres including pit orchestras, traditional Irish music and classical music. While living in Ireland for three years, she particularly enjoyed joining traditional music sessions at local pubs. And though she loves the free liveliness of traditional Irish fiddling, Rebecca will always love playing the classical works of Shostakovich and Mozart (among many other composers) in full orchestras where the technical and stylistic demands of the violin allow her to express her love of violin technique. Rebecca has also joined the worship teams of many different churches, improvising on the violin, singing and leading worship. She was the Worship Director at Dun Laoghaire Evangelical Church in Ireland before moving back to Minnesota to lead worship at LifePoint Church in Maplewood. More recently, Rebecca decided to pursue her dream job of building a healthy violin studio. She now has a thriving studio where she specializes in violin technique training with a holistic and fun approach. You can contact her for more information about violin lessons at email@example.com
